Ready-meal service or meal kit? An honest comparison for Finland

The short answer: ready meals are the better choice if you do not want to cook at all or you need a fixed daily calorie target. Ruokaboksi is the better choice if you want to cook yourself, eat together as a family and pay less per dinner portion, especially when three or more people are eating. For one or two people the gap narrows, and ready meals can cost the same or less.
Below we compare real prices, time, freshness and portion control. All prices were checked on each service's own website on 4 November 2026, and we use regular prices, not first-order discounts.
Price: what does one portion really cost?
The regular Ruokaboksi price is between 5.75 and 12.00 euros per portion, with home delivery included. The cheapest portion comes from the large box (3 to 4 people) with five recipes: 20 portions for 115 euros. The most expensive is the small box (1 to 2 people) with three recipes: six portions for 72 euros. New customers also get a discount on the first box.
On the ready-meal side, FuelMe sells single meals for 10.90 euros (small) and 11.90 euros (regular), with some available as a 13.90 euro large portion. Home delivery costs 5.90 euros per week and is free for orders over 90 euros, with a 40 euro minimum order. Oikia Ruoka sells vacuum-packed home cooking: a 600 gram pack costs about 7 euros and serves 3 to 4 according to the company's own guidance, but you cook the side dish yourself for the sauces, and free delivery starts at 120 euros.
In practice, a family of four pays between 5.75 and 7.42 euros per Ruokaboksi dinner portion, while a ready meal costs at least 10.90 euros. For one or two people, the small three-recipe box (12.00 euros per portion) costs more than a small ready meal. The cheapest option of all is ready-made sauces and soups if you make the sides yourself.
Time: reheating or half an hour at the stove?
Ready meals clearly win on time: you heat and eat. The median preparation time across our recipes is 35 minutes, and half of them take between 25 and 40 minutes. Ruokaboksi still saves the time you would spend planning, writing a shopping list and going to the shop, because the ingredients arrive measured. For many families, cooking together is shared time rather than lost time.

Freshness and storage
Ready meals are already cooked, so their fridge life is usually short unless they are vacuum-packed or frozen. Ruokaboksi delivers fresh ingredients and you cook the dinner yourself that evening. Cook fish and chicken early in the week, and freeze an ingredient if your plans change. If you like the idea of your own ready portions in the freezer, read our guide on meal prep.
Portion size and calories
This is where ready meals are strong. Calorie-planned meal services portion everything for you, so there is nothing to weigh or count. Ruokaboksi ingredients are measured so nothing is left over, but you decide how much goes on each plate. Our recipe pages list nutrition values per 100 grams, so exact calorie counting takes a little work on your side.
Who is each option best for?
Ready meals suit you if you do not want to or cannot find time to cook, you mostly eat alone, you need lunches for work or you follow a strict calorie target. Ruokaboksi suits you if you want to eat home cooking together, try new recipes and keep the family food budget under control. Good starting points are one-pot recipes, pasta recipes, vegetarian dishes and fish recipes.
Many households combine both: weeknight dinners come from the box, and on the busiest days they eat ready meals. If you want to see how food costs add up over a month, read our guide to a family food budget.
