A casserole is a handy way to put together a meal that cooks by itself in the oven with no need to watch it. A classic casserole bakes at 200–225°C for about 25–40 minutes, depending on the thickness of the filling and the dish you use – a wider, shallower dish bakes more evenly than a deep, narrow one.
The most popular are potato, minced meat or fish bakes and creamy gratins with cheese browned crisp on top. You can also add beans or lentils to a casserole for a hearty vegetarian version without losing texture or flavour.
In Ruokaboksi's recipes the ingredients are measured out for you, so the bake works without any extra measuring – fill the dish, put it in the oven and let the flavours develop. Many casseroles taste even better reheated the next day, so it's worth making a larger batch ahead of time.
If the top browns too fast before the inside is cooked through, cover the dish with foil for the rest of the baking time – that way you get an even result every time.
